Tinnitus Frequency Matcher & Tone Generator
Use this free interactive tinnitus tone generator and pitch matcher to safely test and pinpoint your exact ear ringing frequency (250 Hz – 16,000 Hz). Create a customized tinnitus masker with notched sound therapy and export an audiology report.
Customized Tinnitus Sound Therapy
Tailored specifically to your matched pitch (8,000 Hz) to suppress auditory hyperactivity and soothe perceived ringing.
Notched Pink Noise
Clinical gold standard. Soothing pink noise with 8,000 Hz filtered out for comfortable, long-term listening.
Notched White Noise
Full-spectrum white noise with a deep notch carved at 8,000 Hz to induce lateral neural inhibition.
Narrowband Masker
Ambient noise focused directly around 8,000 Hz to gently blend and mask the internal ringing.

The Science of Tinnitus Pitch Matching
Understanding how audiologists measure subjective tinnitus frequency, how acoustic noise trauma damages hair cells, and how tailor-made sound masking works.
What is Pitch Matching?
Because tinnitus is almost always subjective (meaning it can only be heard by the person experiencing it), medical professionals cannot record it with a microphone.
Instead, audiologists use a psychoacoustic protocol known as pitch matching. By presenting synthesized pure tones and narrowband noise at known frequencies (measured in Hertz, or Hz), the patient compares the external tone to their internal perception until a precise acoustic match is established.
How Notched Noise Therapy Works
In 2010, neuroscientists discovered that when the auditory cortex loses input from damaged cochlear hair cells, neighboring neurons become hyperactive and out-of-sync, producing phantom sound.
Tailor-Made Notched Sound Therapy (TMNST) takes white or pink noise and removes a frequency notch (half an octave wide) directly around the patient's tinnitus pitch. Listening to this notched sound stimulates surrounding healthy frequencies while depriving the tinnitus frequency of excitation, promoting natural lateral inhibition.
Common Tinnitus Frequencies & Potential Causes
Tinnitus pitch frequently correlates with specific anatomical regions along the cochlea:
| Frequency Range | Acoustic Character | Common Clinical Associations |
|---|---|---|
| 125 Hz – 500 Hz | Low drone, electrical hum, rumbling engine | Ménière's disease, Eustachian tube dysfunction, venous hum, palatal myoclonus. |
| 1,000 Hz – 3,000 Hz | Mid-range buzzing, fluorescent light hum | Conductive hearing loss, otosclerosis, middle ear effusion. |
| 4,000 Hz – 6,000 Hz | Sharp piercing whistle, steam valve hiss | Acoustic trauma notch: Damage from loud concerts, firearms, power tools, or explosive noise exposure. |
| 7,000 Hz – 9,000 Hz | High static, old CRT television buzz, tea kettle | Most common zone: Age-related sensorineural hearing loss (presbycusis), ototoxic medications (NSAIDs, antibiotics). |
| 10,000 Hz – 16,000+ Hz | Ultra-high squeal, cicadas, electrical whine | Extended high-frequency hidden hearing loss, extreme acoustic trauma, auditory fatigue. |
